PGIA - TAMAP Training Course on Agricultural Policy Analysis October 04 – November 02, 2021


The 5-week Online Course in Agricultural Policy Analysis offered by the Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture (PGIA) will be held from October 04 to November 02, 2021. The objective of the course is to strengthen national capacities for evidence-based policy analysis by providing theoretical knowledge and practical tools for assessing the economic impacts of key domestic and trade policies related to agriculture. The first offering of the course held in February 2021 was highly valued by the 25 participants. Due to prevailing pandemic situation, the next course will now be offered in fully online mode.

The discussion sessions of the workshop provides a sound knowledge on the operating principle of GPS and field and Computer laboratory sessions are designed to provide practical skills on the use of GPS receiver for geo-referencing and field navigation and displaying using Google Earth and QGIS software.

Certificate course on plant breeding techniques for the improvement of annual food & floricultural crops


Plant breeding discipline is facing an endless challenge to improve crop plants. Typically these challenges encompass achieving higher yields, strengthening resistance to certain biotic and abiotic stresses, and improving quality parameters. In order to develop a new variety breeders have to improve an already existing trait or incorporate an entirely new trait, either by conventional methods or manipulating genes through modern technology.
This short course is designed to expand resource base further, share experiences among researchers and provide intensive training to personnel in the public and private sector on a continuing basis. The course will enable professional plant breeders and researchers to upgrade their knowledge in parallel with their current career.

Short Course on Multivariate Data Analysis


The short course offered by the Board of Study in Biostatistics, Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture (PGIA) will provide a broad knowledge and skills of multivariate statistical methods for analyzing multivariate data for a wide variety of academic disciplines including economics, social sciences, agriculture, medicine, veterinary, engineering, natural and physical sciences.
The course comprises of lectures followed by practicals where participants will get hands-on experience in analysing a wide variety of multivariate data using statistical software SAS®.

Short Course on Economics of Ecosystem Services and Biodiversity


This course will present the economics of providing, valuing, protecting and restoring ecosystem services and biodiversity. The course will start with an overview of ecosystem services and biodiversity and introduce the international frameworks (MEA and TEEB) used to study and classify ecosystem services. The participants will then learn the methods used in economics to study and value ecosystem services and biodiversity. The course will introduce discrete choice econometric methods and land use optimization models as tools to incorporate ecosystem services into economic decision making. The course will end with a discussion on Green Accounting and how ecosystem services can be incorporated into national accounting.

Short Course on IWRM

The Board of Study in Agricultural Engineering is organizing a four day short course on Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) to the officials of World Vision Lanka during 09-12 November, 2015 at Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya. The objective of the short course is to impart knowledge on principles and applications of IWRM focusing on Water, Health and Sanitation issues. During this short course, the definition and idea of IWRM, IWRM possibilities and challenges, governance issues, networking, water pollution, water and sanitation, water supply, water safely, tools for monitoring such as GIS will be discussed in interactive sessions.
